Default 4.2 front and rear seals

Putting my engine together[recon head, new bearing shells, timing chains, hone and rings] i stupidly trimmed the rear main rope seals to fit befor reading that they should be massaged into place so will replace befor refitting engine, now with the sump off and the harmonic ballancer removed if i shine a torch on the crankshaft end i can see light through the seal on the underside of the crank and this does not close when pressed by hand?-$75au genuine seal. Is it possible to replace this seal with out removing the crankshaft? Should i be using a sump gasket?-there wasnt one there upon removal. 86 series3
