73 s1 master cylinder
Hello again,
Recently acquired a 73 XJ6 with no brakes. Runs and drives (slowly) but came with the master cylinder in the trunk! Broke down the MC after acquiring a rebuild kit from Rock Auto. There is a large rubber ring that goes on the piston closest to the brake pedal. I split the old one getting it off and when trying to stretch the new one on it became so difficult that I am afraid I will split it before stretching it into place. Anyone rebuilt one of these? Any tricks to getting this thing in place?
Thanks,
Steve

Get a S3 MC - adapt the connections to metric
You can buy a S3 MC and just adapt the one connection to the needed metric size... it will get rid of the S1 remote reservoir and use the same
wiring...
Trying to rebuild brake parts is a waste of time and money... upgrade your system as brakes are really important.

Roger,
I had thought about that since they have similar appearance and an S1 MC is $400 and an S3 is around $80, but was worried about push rod length, mounting flange differences, fluid type etc. Thanks for confirming my suspicion... which connection needs changing? and why is it just one connection? one connection is metric and the other is SAE? Are the flares the same?
Thanks,
Steve

Flares and fluid are the same
Here is how I plumbed the S3 MC to keep from making new lines with new fittings and flares... the metric fitting is the one on the MC.. I just used a short piece of pipe with them on both ends and used the converter piece to join the bent to fit old line.
You can use S3 brake stuff or the whole front end/rear end in your car. This is a good time to change out the three brake line rubber hoses
if it has not been done... then change all the old fluid and fill and bleed.
New MC with good pressure will show up the faults in the old rubber hoses!
