86 xj6 cd player removal
Since a CD player wasn't offered in '86, the original radio has already been replaced...so the mounting panel rivets have been removed and likely replaced by screws.
You didn't say how far long you are. Have you removed the black surround panel?
Pull the climate control knobs straight off and then remove the shaft nuts. Wiggle the black surround panel off. Be mindful of the fiber optics "wires" for the temp control slide lever below the radio.
You should now see the radio mounting panel and the screws or rivets
Remove the right and/or left console "cheek" panels for access to the rear of the radio, if needed. The cheek panels are simply held in place by the two screws at the black footwell vents
Cheers

Yeah and those teensy Pozi screws on the vent outlets are not hard to remove but devilish to restart!!

See the two slots at 180 degrees from each other. There are tools to do that or you can make one from some tubing of the right size and a file. Just teats to engage the slots and allow the tool to undo them.
I got a collection of bits from HF known as a security set that includes a slot drive.

Sometimes needle-nose pliers will work. Or use a hammer to tap the nuts counter clockwise with a screwdriver in one of the slots
