Question 89 XJ6 transmission issue

Just purchased a 1989 XJ6 with a transmission issue. It will go in reverse but when one selects drive it does not move. Has fluid. I am guessing replace the tranny unless someone else knows of a fix. If I have to replace it, is there another model tranny that I should consider. The zf seems to have a short life.

Thanks Bill

As you are NEW, welcome aboard.

Your XJ6 falls into the XJ40 model range.

One of the moderators may see this and move it for you, or else a simple repost in that area will get significantly more suggestions than in here.

Also, when you get a chance, do your intro in the "new members area" at the top, as this keeps things all warm and fuzzy.

The ZF 4HP24 in yours is a strong unit. It fails, like all auto units, from lack of servicing, and some fresh fluid on a regular basis.

Most run 200k miles without too much strife.

The torque convertors do play up eventually.

The fact it actually selects "R" and moves, may be as simple as the cable is not set properly, and the arm on the outside of the unit (lh side) is not moving the internals to the "D" position?, hence no movement of the car.
