Default AC Mode switch Removal

I need to replace the Mode switch on my 85 Series 3. There are 3 screws holding the mode switch to the panel, but after removing the screws there is no room to remove the mode switch.
For those who have done this before, please enlighten me as to the panel removal. From what I can see, the panel has to be removed in order to access the wiring.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The description of work I followed when doing this said you can remove the pigtail round plug and pull it loose. I couldn't get the wiring harness loose so when I did it, Step 1 (from where you currently are) is to remove the wires from the switch. There's three bolts per side (look for the grounding bolt on the D/S for an idea of the locations) that can be removed in order to loosed the bracket. Step 2 is to remove the screws from the bottom plate (where the heater wheel is (the Blue and Red)). This will allow you to move that plate around. Now, Step 3) you can push the switch back into the cavity and rotate it to twist it out through the radio opening.

@ muttony: Thanks. SUCCESS! I figured it out. I had to remove the screws holding the center console and move it back in order to remove the panel that holds the mode switch. As you stated, the harness that goes to the mode switch is difficult to access, so I just removed one wire at a time from the old mode switch and connected it to the new one.
All is good now. It is working as it should. I am in the process of putting everything back together now.
Thanks a lot.
