Default Air con leak

I have a 96 xj6executive with the 3.2 engine.went to get aircon recharged and was advised a leak.so far the only condenser to compressor pipe that i have found is almost £200 !!
Is there anyone who has had this problem and found a reasonably priced solution.can it be repaired or could i get a pipe made up by one of the hydraulic pipe companies.
i dont mind paying for replacement parts when i need them but i hate being ripped off, it just means i have to sell more copies of the big issue!
any advice would be appreciated.

Get a second opinion.

Someone would have to explain to me, EXACTLY WHY I need expensive new parts when (unless this is a type of system I'm totally unfamiliar with) most leaks are at fittings and joints, where new O-rings often fix the problem. This will require evacuation and recharge, but certainly not the new parts you list.

Unless, that is, you've had a compressor meltdown, sending shards of metal and black gunk through the system. That kind of failure IS expensive, but a mere leak??

Well first off, you're in the wrong forum, as your car is an X300 if its a '96.

Anyway, you haven't told us where the leak is. As LnrB says, leaks occur at joints due to O rings going hard, and also at the condenser, which being right at the front of the car, and usually in front or below the radiator, gets lots of salty water so doesn't tend to last long. Unusual for a steel pipe to get holes in, but again, if its near the front or has rubbed on something over the years, can fail.

YOu might be able to get a pipe from an air con specialist, as they probably get their spares from an air con spares dealer.

Presumably the leak is coming from the condenser to compressor pipe, yes?

I believe you need part number MNA7340AD. Some Googling reveals prices from about $75-$170

Depends on the nature of the defect and the abilities/capabilities of the repair shop.

If it's the rubber part (hose portion) leaking then some shops can remove the hose from the aluminum fittings and install a new hose....if they have the equipment to do so.

could i get a pipe made up by one of the hydraulic pipe companies.

Possibly

i dont mind paying for replacement parts when i need them but i hate being ripped off,
As do we all

Cheers

Go to a different airconshop and have them fill it with a fluor leak finder.
Then you will be able to spot the leak instantaneously and accurately.
