Although intermittent is there any pattern at all? Only when cold? Only when fully warmed up? Only when on the left (or right) fuel tank?
Have you inspected for any stain/evidence of an actual fuel leak?
If it only happens when cold then you might have the double-fueling issue, the fix described here:
XJ 6 Series III 4.2 - Cold Start EFI Overfuelling
For more reading on 'rich mixture' problems....which could give a raw gas smell if severe enough.... take a peek here.
XJ6 Series - EFI Rich Mixture
Cheers

Right tank leaks at the sending unit? Or merely, you can't tell if there is fuel in it and if so how much or empty!!!
My thinking is that if feasible, put some fuel in it and run on it and see if the issue moves with it or is gone.
A help in isolating the fault.
Swapping in a new sender isn't all that bad. I've ever done it. But, Elinor did and posted a neat tutorial.
