Default I need help diagnosing a problem

Ok, so when i am dricing along in my 1985 XJ6, ocassionally it will lose power and the engine sputters. So far, i dont have a whole lot of information about it, other than it doesn't ALWAYS happen, and it smells of gasoline right afterwards.

Although intermittent is there any pattern at all? Only when cold? Only when fully warmed up? Only when on the left (or right) fuel tank?

Have you inspected for any stain/evidence of an actual fuel leak?

If it only happens when cold then you might have the double-fueling issue, the fix described here:

XJ 6 Series III 4.2 - Cold Start EFI Overfuelling

For more reading on 'rich mixture' problems....which could give a raw gas smell if severe enough.... take a peek here.

now that you mention it, it only really seems do do it when fully hot and usually at 55 mph and higher, though it has done it at around 40 as well. currently i am only able to use the left tank because the sending unit in the right tank is bad.

Right tank leaks at the sending unit? Or merely, you can't tell if there is fuel in it and if so how much or empty!!!

My thinking is that if feasible, put some fuel in it and run on it and see if the issue moves with it or is gone.

A help in isolating the fault.

Swapping in a new sender isn't all that bad. I've ever done it. But, Elinor did and posted a neat tutorial.

You could swap the senders and work from there...

Have you checked the fuel filter on the left tank?
Could be some rust clogging it...
