Default Auxillry Air Valve

I was reading the write up on the AAV and it says it is easy to check when the engine is cold the hole should be completely open and as it warms up it will close. I just bought a new one and looking at It out of the box the hole is close except for a small slit. Does it require 12 volt to open???? Thanks Jerry

hmmm.

It's been years since I last really looked at one but I recall that a small slit IS "completely open". The electrical connection, as I recall, is a heater to ensure that it closes

Jut for kicks put it in the refrigerator for an hour and see if anything changes

Others with a better memory will chime in

Cheers

OK so I put the AAV in the frige not freezer for about 2 1/2 hours and it is very cold and look inside and the little disc is about 1/4 of the way open. This valve must be made for very cold days which is never the case where I am located. Beginning to wonder if it is my idle problem. Thanks Jerry

The ROM is not very specific and offers no illustrations of the business end of the AAV

It does offer this:

"place the air valve in cold water., do not let the water into the electrical terminals or into the bypass channel. The blocking plate should fully expose the bypass orifice. Immerse the air valve in hot water. The blocking plate should gradually close the bypass orifice".

But no info or description as to identifying what "fully open" really looks like

Cheers
