Bonnett realignment ? 86 XJ6
I took off the bonnett to get to the radiator. And when we put the bonnet back on we had problems realigning it . After 4 attemps we finally got the sides lined up straight .but now the drivers side is too far forward where the front ( lights , grill etc.) sticks out about an inch too far. Having said that the bonnett will not close correctly. there is about an inch gap between the windshield panel and the bonnett, so the bonnett latch isn't touching down where it should . Any ideas on how to fix this ???
The big issue to overcome is keeping the hinges on the bonnet in place while shutting the bonnet. Zillions of loosen move and tighten will get there. But, as they say a thousand monkeys on a thousand typewriters will eventually print out the Declaration of Independence.
A fellow on another forum had a marvelous idea. Remove the grill for access to the hinge bolts. Loosen them. Wiggle the bonnet into alignment. Tighten hinge bots, Open bonnet and align striker pins. Replace grill.
I used the monkey technique and got mine sorta close. At least if opens and closes reasonably well.
