Default Cables and Relays

Looking for reminders here-

the change-over relay for the headlights, 5 pins 56 a b c and 31 and 81, in the change over process what is connected to which and does what?. I have a spare one I was mucking with an can't make sense of it.

for the series 2 car is there a required model spark plug lead, I have a jumble of different colours, makers and ends as well as 'model' numbers. Is there a recommended type/brand/series/model/numbercode for these I might be missing.?

Headlights

the following is S3 related, assume its similar

56 = 12V+ from the headlight switch

56b = the low beam headlight cct. This is the resting position of the relay. When you turn on the headlights current flows via the switch and the relay contacts to the low beam bulbs

56a = the high beam headlight cct. When the relay is on, power from 56 switches to this contact to light the high beams

81 = permanent +12V to one side of the relay coil

31 = earth to the other side of the coil via the headlight flasher (or hi/lo beam) lever

The relay mechanically latches one way or the other. Each pulse from the headlight lever switches between 56 to either 56a or 56b. To test , toggle the relay with 31/82 and work out the switching that is going on on the 56 leads.

I have NFI re the plug leads

There were times while refurbishing Nix's front suspension (and everything else I touched in the process) when I looked at the car with gritted teeth and clinched fists. There were Many days I couldn't even go into the shop and pass by the work space.

Today isn't one of those days, and there hasn't been one for quite a while, but I DO know how you feel.

You'll get over it though, the car will call to you and you'll be at it again.
