Can mufflers be deleted (78 xj12)
hi all,
I'm in the early stages of doing up a barn vehicle. I'm keen to get the car going without initially spending a fortune on it. In general both body and interior are very sound.
ive got the fuel tanks out of the 1978 Daimler Double 6 they are a real mess. The amount of rust is large and the fuel tank sender unit is probably beyond repair.
the rear mufflers are out and they a corroded out. I assume the front mufflers are no better.
Is it possible to run the car with either the front or rear muffler removed and replaced with straight pipe. Obviously I require a reasonable amount of noise suppression, though a slightly louder exhaust note would not be a problem
if I did only have one muffler per side would it be best to retain the front or the rear
regards

No direct experience with this car. But, in theory, the V12 would be quite happy sans all four. Noisy, for sure, but not as much as one might think, if the exhaust was piped all the way to the rear.
In my lexicon. the front pair are mufflers and the rear pair are resonators.
My car is a lump. Early on in it's swap, it had no connected mufflers or resonators. Only "down pipes" from the manifolds. At low RPM"s not all that noisy. Up the Rev's and hear the roar of a heathy V8. No squawks from nice neighbors on it's initial victory lap. I kept the throttle light. Same for the voyage to the muffler place. No noise ticket!!!
So, pipe it as you please, either pair will work. To enhance, add an "H" or "X" pipe to ease harmonic resonance, and allow a Jaguar purr.

That's the most common arrangement and terminology although it's isn't unusual to find resonators in front. In some cases it comes down to 'packaging'.....what space is available under the car.
My non-expert understanding is that 'resonators' are more for fine-tuning the sound while mufflers do the lion's share of actual noise suppression.
On some older GM cars the resonators were called 'attenuators'. Odd.
I usually just call 'em all 'mufflers' and leave it at that

Mine is a 6 not a 12, shouldnt make much difference, i deleted my front mufflers and just kept the resonators, didnt nake a huge difference at all, has a slight growl.to it, but nothing untoward.... look back in my posts and theres a pic.of the straight pipes welded in.
