Default Rusty fuel tanks 78 double six

hi all,
im poking away at the 1978 V12 barn find, a case of two steps forward, one step backwards ( or was it three).
i removed the fuel tanks today. Not a very difficult job but certainly time consuming and without a hoist, a lot of grovelling around on the floor.
The amount of rust in the tanks was absolutely amazingly! I battle to get my head around it. I can certainly understand water collecting at the bottom and causing corrosion there but the entire tanks are rusty. The fuel gauge senders look like they have been retrieved from the wreck of the Titanic so corroded are they.
I used a high pressure water blaster to remove the bulk of the rust from the interior.
There are rusty pinholes in the tank.
I have purchased a fuel tank repair kit and new senders . I am hopeful that this will affect a satisfactory repair

Steangely the car itself is amazingly rust free. I am battling to understand why a fuel tank would be so rusty. Externally they look perfect
regards
al
