Car Parked for 9 Years --- Issues?
My neighbors are selling their 1986 XJS with about 87,000 miles on the clock. The car is in good shape, but has been parked since 1999. What issues could this have caused? My thoughts run to the tranny seals, A/C compressor seals, etc.and probably the tires, although they looked OK.
Also, what is this car worth? Cosmetically, it seems fine....
Thanks, C.

issues regardless of model of car: (XJ-S is the 2-door model, XJ-6 is the 4-door model).
engine and transmission oils turn to goo,
coolant turns to corn flour,
gasoline turns to varnish/turpentine,
brake fluid turns to ?
refrigerant oil and gas turns to ?
And the real issue: why was the car unused for 9 years? You have a lot of work ahead to revive the car from its long sleep. Drain the fuel tank(s) FIRST, then replace all other fluids, TWICE, (first time to start and drive the car, then after driving it for a week or so, do it all over again).
worth? whatever you are willing to pay and the seller is willing to accept. Hey, it's a Jaguar. Just my opinion.

RE: Car Parked for 9 Years --- Issues?
Greetings C.,
Jose gave you a good start on the list of problems you will encounter. The most important issue with this model, once you have it running, is the condition of the fuel injector hoses. Any salvage yard that has ever sold Jaguar parts has seen a torched V12XJS. High underhood temperatures, a nominal36 psi pressure, and old age leads to these hoses splitting and sraying fuel on top of the engine. Check the 12 injector hoses, as well as the pressure regulator and fuel cooler fuel hoses, before you attempt to start the engine. This is not an exaggeration.
V12 engines suffer extensive and rapid damage when overheated. I would be very suspect of the condition of the radiator, not just because of the time the car has been sitting, but alsoit's age and mileage. Sixteen coolant hoses are a blast to change too.
If the car has very presentable paint and body, and the interior is in good condition, it's maybe worth $2,000. at the point you can road test it. You should double that figure if you plan on preparing it for regular use. Even doing alot of the repairs yourself, these cars will rack up some receipts. Sitting for any extended period of time does nothing but make matters worse.

Making Jaguars daily drivers keep them healthy, you more wealthy, and a lot more wise. Making a garage queen out of your baby is kinda like owning a nice painting, nice to look at, but inviting problems. Letting them sit for LONG periods of time creates a lot of memories, and, if you stick to it, very knowledgable about LOTS of repairs. How much is it worth? How much do you want it? With a little reserch, you can probably find one in good running condition, with less problems, for less than you'll spend on repairs on the one thats been sitting that long. Depending on why its been sitting that long, it might only be good for a parts car. Besides, if you find one thats driveable, at least you can enjoy it while making lesser repairs. Regards. Keith

good suggestion keith -- $500 sounds fair. If the body and interior are perfecto, maybe a grand. If you are going to tackle this project, make sure you clean your fuel tank out several times over; otherwise, you'll be going through fuel filters every few days.

RE: Car Parked for 9 Years --- Issues?
Thanks guys. I'm not a Jag guy, so I appreciate your help.I just have this opportunity by proximity.I've always liked the marque though.
The situation is the car is garage kept and the guy who owned it died. He bought it from his buddy in 99 (who died), parked it, and that was that. I don't know why he never drove it. It's been undera cover in his garage for as long as I can remember.
So you guys think for a fluid flush, new coolant/injector hoses, etc. we would be looking at $2K in expenses? That really affects the value of the car, as I am seeing good examples on ebay for like $3-4K. The owners have a higher expectation on price, I think they were thinking $5K.
I have local shop that does a lot of Jags. I'll call over and get their ideas and pricing thoughts as well. I think they know the owner and may have heard about thecar from him. It's really a pretty car and I'd like to get it if possible.

cdog,
That was my point, if the car was well maintained and cosmetically good it was $4K. You can find them everywhere like that...so if that's your budget, go search for a better candidate.
If you're paying for the service work you listed, that's $1K right off the bat.

Cdog, here's the deal. Your neighbor may want $5,000.00 for the car, but I can direct you to dozens for less than that, that are running, drivable, and look good too. If you really like the car, then its not going to matter how much you pay, as long as you can justify to yourself, the cost, plus all the repair expenses. I know in my case, I'm a lot happier being able to drive mine while repairing its small issues, than putting in a lot of time and money, and it still sitting in the driveway, undriveable. If you found a nice one for, say, half of their asking price, every time you drove out of your driveway, seeing their car still sitting there, you'd be grinning from ear to ear, glad you took the time to look around. Besides, as time goes by, and your enjoying your XJS, maybe they'll give up and offer it to you as a parts car, at a more reasonable price.

I don't know about this one. If for nothing else, it seems that everyone who buys this car dies. Take it as a sign and find a different one.
