car problem please help...!!! :(
I have 1986 XJ6, about a week ago she started backfiring, then after few days she started hasitating during drive until last wednesday when she completely died.
I took her to a Jaguar specialist for a diagnostics....they suspected the exhaust to be clogged up, or sparkplugs installed cricked.
The car turns over, and when the engine starts it has no power( I have to hold the gas pedal all the way just to keep it running)
She sounds like she is running on three cylinders. And it sounds like the headder gasket is broken. (it smells like fumes on the drivers side, and you could hearwizzing sound of air comming out)
-the car has fuel
-I checked distributor cap for crack or moisture. (it was fine)

here's a little more info..
the car starts, but to have the engine run I have to put the pedal to the metal. And when the engine is running it has no power to move the vehicle.
any input is appreciated.
thank you guys.

Every once in a while you might run across a crooked mechanic that causes a problem, almost never a crooked spark plug. Have him test your fuel pressure to make sure it is sufficient.
Blocked catalytic converters is a problem on your model Jaguar: the normal symptom is that the engine will start and idle normally, but have very poor acceleration. Thiscondition develops gradually, it doen't choke the power out of your car overnight. A failing fuel pump/ restrictive fuel changeover solenoid, or fuel filter will.

I've had similar problem - the car just stop one day. Engine started but did exactly the same as yours..
No power, lots of pufs and strange voices, shaky engine - like it will die in seconds... I have XJ12 and sound was also like doing on three cylinders..
My mechanic almost lost his mind - he did and checked everything that possible - all that is needed for an engine to work was OK - like fuel, pressure, sparks - it should work but didn't.
At the end he found the problem - it was some electronic module, I can't remember... 2 modules to be precise.
I will ask him exactly what was the problem and contact you again.

I have a 1990 XJ6-- I had a similar problem....that's why I bought the car at a good price. It was using alot of fuel, it would start on cold morings and after you ran it to temperature it would begin to bog down and run real rich. Once you shut it off it would not start again until the engine was cold. It was the temperature sending unit on the gooseneck. A $27 item. When the unit fails the fuel injection doesn't know what the temp of the engine is...duh! Easy to test before you buy one. If you go that route I'll look up the specs for the power side of the wire ( I think it's 5 on my meter reading) and the resistance the unit should give sitting unplugged and cold.
Frankie whereis this unit located?
Just came back from checking her.....would the exhaust manifold do this kinda thing - there is a leak on it.
How much would it be to fix it. I hope it's just gasket...
Thank you guys

JagtechOhio you were right the front cat was gone. I had it replaced, ....we took out O2 sensor to see if it's only the cat...and youcould see fire comming out of that hole when the engine was running..

It would take a massive leak for the exhaust manifold to play a part.

Don;t kNow if this will help: But
I've been driving an 84' XJ6 for a year and Half. The first 4 month's were smooth. All of a sudden it started sputtering on the road and e-way, fuel bagan spewing from the fuel filter (Lower, Front passenger side), and from the gas tanks as I filled them up at the station. Very agrevating. I changed the filter and checked all hoses and rail, but still kept spewing. Found out it was the Fuel Tank Change valve selonoids. I guess they werent producing vacuum. My cats been prowling ever since.

To check the sensor measure the resistance while cold--1500-3000 ohms
While hot---280-350ohms
Mine measured nothing at all then I replaced it. Also the single wire going to the unit should be carring 5 volts with the key in the on position.
On your VCM it will read Code 3.....good luck

and another one......how difficult is to replace distributor?
