I have a 1979 Xj6L series 2 (I'm brand new to jags and know zero about them) that's needing some parts and I'm getting mixed answers online about what all fits what
I'm in the central US.
Nothing with the motor really. It will be replaced by an LS soon.
Floor pans...they're listed some places as series 3 fitting and xjs.
What are the correct pans and wheres thr best place to get them?
Brakes and brake system components or upgrades... what fits and where to buy?
Same with axles, shafts, suspension parts...
basically anything that doesn't have to do with the motor, what all jaguars are the same parts as the 79 s2 xj6?
For general items like brake calipers, pads, rotors, U-joints, etc I use RockAuto. You get to select the quality you want - stay away from the cheap stuff.
For suspension bushings there is really only one answer - direct from Jaguar. You can buy the cheap ones from RockAuto but you'll be doing the job again. The Jaguar ones are the original Metalastik brand and are not that expensive. They are certainly cheaper than doing the job twice. Stay away from any Uro parts.

For mechanical parts there's a fair amount of interchangeability between Series II and Series III sedans....and even the XJS. Particularly brakes and suspension. But you really have to go part-by-part.
My guess (and that's all it is) is that Series III floorpans are the same as Series II, or at least close enough to work.
One useful thing to know is that the later XJ40 front lower ball joint, which is a totally new design to the old one, fits the previous XJs and indeed, all the saloons back to the Mark 1, but not the Mark VII, VIII, and IX cars. These last almost for ever and it is total waste of money to faff around with the old ball joints, just fit the XJ40 design and forget about them ! No greasing or adjustment !
The one to buy is made by Lemforder : - https://www.sngbarratt.com/English/#...SPENSION(14714)
When you remove the old joint you must remember to knock out the bearing ring from the upright, then just bolt the new ones on.

Very good advice however one small point is that the MK1 suspension ball joints are not compatible with any later Jags.
They are basically the same as MK7,8,9.
I have had 6 MK1s and came across this incompatibility problem 40 years ago.
Your advice is correct for MK2s and onwards. (I have had 6 MK2s)
