Considering purchase of a 1973 XJ6....
So, I am not very familiar with the older Jags, or the XJ6 series at that...
What should I watch out for on this car?
The guy is asking $4k or best offer
Asked about the condition and this is the response
"WOOD IS NICE LEATHER IS NICE ALSO NO RIPS BUT COULD USE A DIE JOD FADED A LITTLE AND THE HEAD REAST LOOK LIKE THERE IS NOTHING IN THEM LIKE THE STUFFING IS GONE. IT SHOWS 86000 MILES ON IT. EVERYTHING ELC WORKS. I GOT HE CAR FROM A GUY THAT HAD IT FOR 30 YEARS. HE IS INTO BRITISH CARS AND BIKES HE TOLD ME HE REBUILT THE MOTOR 15 YEARS AGO THEN TOOK IT ON A TRIP AND BACK AND THEN USED IT FORA TOY FOR A BIT THEN IT WAS PUT AWAY 6 YEARS A GO AND NEVER RUN THEN I GOT IT AND TRAILED IT HOME AND WINT OVER THE BRAKES AND FUEL IT RUNS GOOD AND DRIVES GOOD. THAT IS ABOUT "

Frankly, you do need to go and look and test drive the car. If it is a real peach and the owner has all the evidence of care and attention, then $4k could be the right price. Even better is to take somebody knowledgeable in these cars with you. Many people have been sold heaps of junk on the internet. Post photos if there are any.
Is it a Series 1 or 2. A 1973 indicates to me it is a Series 2. A Series 1 would be worth more if in the same condition.

I'm not positive if Series I or II... It looks like there was a change in 1973 for the 1974 year.. My only concern about going to look at is is it's like 200 miles away.
So, if I go look at it I am not sure what to watch out for, buy it, trying to drive it home on the highway with 75-85MPH traffic and it breaks down or what have you....
I am looking to replace my x308 due to the tensioners in the x308.
In the photos the xj6 looks clean

Well according to the pics it's a series 1and it looks pretty good, however pics can be deceiving and the best way really is to go and have a look physically. As far as price goes if it is what they say it is here down under it would be good but not sure in your neck of the woods. If it were me I'd take the drive and check it out for mechanics electrics and any rust in the usual places (lower window sills, door sills etc.etc.).....good luck, nice looking car.
I can't find the pictures? Just me?
But, if it seems attractive it is indeed worth a 200 mile trip. Actually 400, f you want to come home!!! Nice day trip, or stay over?
Take a mate. Ride there and back up to drive it home. Caveat, it may not be up to a 200 mile trip w/o prep. Tires immediately come to my attention. And, oil and coolant refresh. Trans fluid, brake fluid, etc.
Many have done this just fine and even overcome some issues. It is termed "adventure"!!!
Good luck.

It's 42 years old. There's gonna be some risk. There's no amount of inspection that will take that away.
What to watch for? With respect to the 200 mile return trip with the car? Same as any other old car: no major fluid leaks, and all fluids topped off. Brake fluid topped off, brakes feel OK. Tires look OK.....no bulges or cracking?
Take it on a good test drive before purchase, including highway speed. If everything seems OK after 15-20 miles....no overheating, no horrible noises, brakes work....then you'll probably make it home OK.
Drive in the slow lane at 60 mph. 85 mph in a 42 y/o car of uncertain condition is crazy.

1) Rust
2) Condition of paint, wood, leather, chrome. If these things are important to you be prepared to spend big money.
Most *mechanical* work on an old Jag like this is relatively inexpensive if you are a reasonably decent DIY mechanic.
