Default Couple questions...

Hey everyone, so I have a couple questions, some I'm sure you can answer and a couple you may not, either way here I go.

If you haven't seen any of my previous posts, I'm doing a restore on a friend's 73 xj6 with a chevy 350 in plant.
My first question is brake fluid, which do I use? I'm assuming it's probably not just standard dot 3/4 correct?
Next question is the tie rods, i was told by the guy at my parts store that there is a 14mm and 16mm, which is correct for the earlier year?
Lastly, the power steering, now this is a question you guys might not be able to answer, but the parts store guy also told me that in the older cars you use transmission fluid in the power steering. Is that true?
Also, a transmission flush is in order so which fluid do I need? Probably a question to ask on a chevy forum.

Thanks for any help you can give!!

DOT 3 or 4 should be fine. I used either in my older Jags. Some of the much older Jags....like 50s vintage I think....used a Girling fluid (or something like that) which (supposedly) was more compatible with "English rubber". But, by the 70s I don't think Jaguar was using anything unusual.

Dexron III should be fine in your transmission, assuming it's a GM trans. If the V8 was mated to an old Borg Warner trans (it might have been) then use Type F or Type FA

Jaguar and many others used ATF as power steering fluid. Should be fine.

I *think* the larger tie rods came out much later....like 1982 or something. I'd have to do some checking. Or perhaps someone else will chime in before then

Cheers

Not all ATF is the same. There is mineral, Dexron Mercon, Type F, Type G, DW1 and a few variations. Jag and many vintage cars use Type F or simply use regular Power steering fluid. Both lack the additives that may cause you problems with your rack, such as seal failure.

FWIW I've used both Dex III and Types F and FA in my power steering and everything seemed OK. That is, nothing horrible seemed to happen over the years. 80s vintage Jags and my 1995 XJR.

Me too, in a bunch of critters. The PS system lives a much simpler life than an auto trans. so, additives not really that big a deal. It would probably do OK on a simple light non detergent engine oil.

Doug, V8's on old JAG BW's? I suppose, anything is possible. Adapter, torque converter, controls,???
