Default Fender/hood interchangeability 1987 and 1988

Hey all!

I am all set to get an 88 XJ6 from a friend over the summer once money starts coming I again. It’s for short money as it’s a bit tired but it’s solid. The thing is, it’s an 88 and my wife and I are both quite a bit more fond of the 87 and back with the more sculpted hood. I have easy access to series II (they’re all up on welded rim stands, suspension hanging or I’d get my data from my suspension thread from them) and it would be cheap to get the front clip. Has anyone ever done this or perhaps does anyone have one of each side by side to verify
if things line up?

Many thanks

drew

A 1987 XJ6 could be a Series III body style or the later XJ40 body style. They're entirely different body types

It sounds like you want to use Series III panels on an XJ40 car.

It won't work.

Bummer. By “won’t work” do you mean like holes won’t line up and much fabrication would be needed, or body shapes and lines won’t blend? I’m good with the former

seems of course the wiser choice would be to wait for a series 3 then. Shame because the prices seem to be skyrocketing for clean ones. Perhaps a troubled one that needs a motor. I’ve thought it might be neat to put Lexus power in one. No one has done it, to my knowledge

not sure of the culture on this forum - if motor swaps are considered distasteful, I’d gladly withhold statements about them

I dunno about bolts holes specifically but the contours, sizes, and designs are totally different.

Lots of motor-swappers here; no problems.

There have been some problems in the past but, IMO, they stemmed primarily from a couple guys in the motor-swap contingent being overly critical of Jaguar designs and engineering. In a room full of Jaguar enthusiasts this can naturally ruffle feathers. But, that's all in the past.

Is there something wrong with the bodywork on the XJ40 you're about to own? Why not simply purchase an XJ6 Series III rather than trying to graft the front onto an XJ40? The cars are significantly different from all aspects as the Series III was designed in the early 1960s with matching engineering.

Might be wary of the 88. The first of the XJ40 cars. A new model year can have teething issues.
But,as to this individual, it has survived, so any issues have been resolved.

I almost bought a nice 88, My 83 was laid up with a busted engine! Lot owner and I failed to agree on the price. it was summer and the AC was really cold. Wifey liked that!! serious door rash to consider. dealer not impressed!!

Yeah, I lumped mine. I am tolerated.

Ok so that answers the question. This forum and some reading makes it clear they aren’t just facelift vs pre-facelift but different cars.

Nothing is wrong with the 88 im just in love with the series III look.

Good to know motor swaps are cool. And I’ll never be the one to bash jag engineers. Not a make on the road I think I can do better than LOL. there are some things I’ve come across in all makes I wish were different. Ever change the oil on a 1mz or 3mz v6? Haha.

I really want to get one of these. the deal on the ‘88 is really good. But if it’s the wrong car
for us I guess I should wait.

Thanks for all of your replies
