Wiring polarity doesn't matter in this case

I don't recall the silver/black variation. I recall the brackets being oriented in opposite directions

I'll have to mull a bit

Cheers

The right valve is new and I can only imagine the left/driver's side is as well, just haven't gotten to that side yet. What is stopping fuel from returning to the left tank when that tank is selected? bad valve? Bad switch? The valve wired or installed so the fuel is not allowed to enter the left tank?
That tiny hole is a vent

The fuel return is lower in the neck, about 1/4" diameter. Use a screwdriver to open the little flap in the fill neck and you'll see it with a flashlight

Here's some reading on the changeover system

I would call Barratt and ask what is it with this silver and gold solenoids, I have not seen that either. Ask them to identify which is which. Doesn't matter which wire goes where, that 's why they are both black like Doug said.

Maybe the valves are made by two different companies? Unfortunately they were both made in China.

So, fuel coming out of that tiny vent hole is a bad thing?

Time to run through all the test procedures.

they used to be made in India and Mexico, but it doesn't matter, they are made to Jaguar specs (supposedly).
Ford, GM, Chrysler, and most everyone else are having their parts made in China too. I am not worried. Chinese make everything to ISO9000 quality standard for a fraction of USA and Germany costs.

One return valve is normally open the other normally closed. Or at least oriented that way

Turn the key "on", select the right tank, and using your test light check for voltage at the white/purple wire for each valve. Your light should show 12 volts at all three valves. YES, I have voltage at all three when right tank is selected.

Now, select the left tank and make the same voltage tests. There should be no voltage at any of the valves. NO voltage when left tank is selected.

If these checks are OK and the valves won't switch over then the valves are mechanically faulty or not properly grounded. Check for proper grounding, if the ground is good then the valve(s) must be condemned.

Can the switch now be ruled out? I hear a "click" when the valves are plugged back in. The right being louder than the left. Can the valves still be at fault?

Not sure what I did, if anything but...

- Replaced both valves.
- I now hear fuel returning to the appropriate tank when Left of Right is selected.
- So far, I don't see any fuel leaking out of the hose that goes to the evap cannister, but I will keep my eye on it. I have only run the car in my driveway and driven maybe a 10th of a mile.
- Time will tell if the right tank overfills again.
