Default fuel pump wiring problem

Hi
car is a early MK 2 in England
I have just got the car and it had a wire from the battery to the fuel pump
so i pulled that out and hooked it up as it should be
now the car will run for about 2 minuets then stops if i switch it off the pump will prime again when switched on
i have managed to work out there is a relay attached to the fire wall that is controlled buy the oil light switch
if i disconnect the oil light switch wire and earth it the car will run all day
so some sort of safety device
I can't find a wiring diagram with this on so idea's most welcome
Thanks

download the MK-2 factory Service Manual (free) from my website in the MANUALS page, to see if it helps with wiring and diagnosing the issue. (assuming you don't have the factory manual):

Yes, it's a safety switch.

The wire running from the oil switch to the relay will be "open" when the engine is not running and will be "earthed" by oil pressure when engine is running. If the pump stays running when you disconnect the relay wire from the switch and earth it, sounds like the oil pressure switch is faulty. You could test it with a volt/ohm meter to confirm.

The reason the engine will run again when the key is turned off and back on is a normal function of the ECM that controls the fuel injection. It's purpose is to pressurize the injectors at each startup. The pump runs for about 2-3 seconds at key-on and will stop if you haven't continued to key-start by then (but the system will retain enough pressure to fuel the engine). Once the engine fires up, the fuel pump starts again and continues to run until you turn the key off or the oil pressure fails.

If you have carburetors, the function and purpose of the fuel system is similar, just different pressures and methods of control.

Aye, a scheatic is the best ay to aid diagnosis,

another way is to think and trace.

what is the logic of the circuit? previus post gets that. Shut down the fuel pump if the engone is not running. a safety thing.

How is that accomplished? Teh OP sensor serves as a ground open/ground closed. Op does that. Teh circuit is the control leg on the fuel pump relay.

aye, there can be mre than one way to cmplete mthe copntrol leg. Op sensr being one.
So, if my thinking is correct. the sensor, the relay or the wres might be the fault.
