To expand on Doug's info....
I had heaps of trouble with the fuel pump cutting out, usually when I was at full chat passing 10 cars at once, and up a hill too !!
There are two tiny contacts on the end of stalks inside the compartment atop the AFM. Once you get the black cover off, you'll see them and also see that there is an operating lever made of bent wire, that keeps the contacts apart until the air flap moves. The volts via these contacts switch the fuel pump relay, which is by-passed when the starter motor is operated. What happens is the springiness of the stalks diminishes over time so they don't make good contact. It is mentioned in Roger Bywaters article on the XK EFI system.
