I am totally new to the Jaguar world but very excited. Does anyone know if a 1986 and 1989 XJ6 body parts are interchangeable?

Not interchangeable. The '86 would be a Series III XJ6. The '89, although it carries the same "XJ6" name, has a totally different body. For clarification (heh heh...of sorts) these later cars are often referred to as the "XJ40"....which is the factory/engineering designation.
