My starter is excited via the Jaguar way. I use a Buelher 4 pin relay. The trigger circuit is completed at the micro switch on the shift tower. Caveat. I have diodes on the load pins. Per Johnscars instructions. Actualy they are two inserts in the connectors.
Odd things happen if not used. Do not ask... the pain of it.
Since a jump will crank, that leaves three likely causes.
Alignment of the micro switch at the tower.
2. Good ground from micro.
3. Bum relay. If the original Jaguar tin can. Very suspect.
I have an emergency crank wire. RED from solenoid to the vicinity of battery +.
Taped over, but there if needed to crank.. And get me home...
Electrickery by far the most challenging in my swap.
A fellow lumper made a lens for the CEL. It looks so original that the SMOG referee was impressed. Check engine printed on transparent material
My car is OBD I. but, the port is shaped ala OBD II. Seems to be a mid 94 change in prep fr OBDII.
Not sure iu it’s the same with the xjs, but I had to pull the wires up into cabin from the jag transmission as the neutral safety switch was on trans , was just a matter of adding a micro switch to shifter and connecting the wires to it, that way utilizing the entire jag wiring for starter,
Carl, you have better info retention than I. I had forgotten about the diode in the PNP circuit. The info for it's placement and part number is on Jaguar Specialties site under "tech tips....".
@Darren: Yes. SUCCESS. It was the relay. The fine wire going to the coil was burnt. As a result the relay could not energize.
On the search for a relay, I came across an article on the Jag- Lovers forum about using a very cheap substitute relay on the Jag.
Chrysler ECH- SR5 starter relay for under $30. (NAPA) The article stated that you would have to make some changes to the connections but in my case I did not have to do that because I am not using the Jaguar EFI
I made some jumpers and plugged them into the Jaguar harness and connected the jumpers to the SR5 relay.
SR5 relay has 4 connections. Jaguar uses 5 connections. The fifth is for the Jaguar EFI system (white/blue)
Battery, Solenoid, Ignition and Ground. I used the Green/Black wire that goes to the microswitch as the ground on the SR5 relay.
Works great and still would only crank in 'P' and 'N'
BTW: I had removed the trans harness when I was setting up the car for the engine change. this is the SR5 relay. Wiring is temporary. I will neaten that up when it stops raining.
The resistor between Ign and ground can be removed, but I did not want to open up the relay.
No issues with the resistor being there.
Darren/LT1:
I took a 4 month hiatus from the LT1 conversion because I purchased a 1985 XJS Coupe and I spent the time reviving the V12 engine.
Now that is done, I am back on the LT1 conversion.
I believed that the last time I posted about the car, I mentioned that the car ran but the CEL stayed on. I installed the OBD1 ALDL connector but I am unable to read the code/s. I have an ACTRON code reader but it is not communicating with the ECM.
I have been in contact with the Painless techs but they only confirm that I have the system wired up correctly.
The ECM on my car is a rebuilt unit and as a result there are no markings to indicate what year or application it is for.
The Painless techs think that the ECM could be the problem why I cannot read the codes since based on my reports to them they say the ALDL is wired up properly.
I am looking for a used ECM that is OBD1 compatible.
Any ideas?
Sanchez,
My CEL comes on with the key to "on" and then goes out when the engine starts, that should be correct. I haven't tried to hookup a scan tool yet because it runs pretty well and I can't drive it now anyway. If Painless confirms your wiring, I would go with that until you can prove otherwise. My PCM version is xxxx051 which is correct for '94 and '95 LT1's, might be correct for '96 also. '93 and earlier is a different unit and won't work. If you look on Shoebox.com there is info on what numbers are appropriate for what year. When I had my PCM tuned they could read the original vehicles VIN, which I think is necessary to configure the scan tool. If you don't have the original VIN, this might be where your problem is.
NO! OBD I will not read codes. It will read data. From the data, we are to diagnose.
EGR function, etc. It seems tat GM went from OBD I to OBD Ii in mid 94. Hence my 94 has an OBD Ii shaped port, but is wired OBD I1 An issue that the SMOPG tech and I had to resolve.
MY former O2 light is now CEL. It reads check engine. Lumper BbB Loftuse made a transparency for it. I robbed a lighting kit for it!!
Alas, When I altered the crank circuit, I skpped the diodes.A back feed cranked the engine while running. Luckily the flywheel teeth survived. Starters diod not il
I haven’t tried to hook up my old scanner, , hell I do t even know where it is, haven’t used it in probably 20 years, that being said, there’s something about 95 pcm that makes it obd1.5 Did it originally have an obd2 connection? If so it’s definitely a 95 as 94 had the old obd 1 connection, I spent the money on a cable to hook laptop to obd port, and am using scan9495 to see what’s going on, pulls codes, erases them, monitors sensors eta, great program for the price (free) and the author , Gary Doug will help you with issues connecting and reading etc, if you have any that is, I had to reconfigure a port on laptop as it’s an older one, but that was it, I also have eehack , flash hack and tuner pro, between them I can change tune, delete or add stuff , etc, great setup and all free, worth the cost of the cable!
i had a spare pcm but the cost of fiddling in the tune with a low laptop battery is a bricked pcm!! So now I have a paperweight!
??s for you.
Are you using both MAP and MAF Sensors?
The PO of the engine told me when I bought it that the EFI was converted to a Speed Density system and was only using the MAP sensor. His info to me is very dubious since every time I talk to him he gave me a different story.
From what I know, these engines came with both a MAP and a MAF sensor. My thinking is that if he indeed programmed the ECU to run as a Speed Density system, I can revert to the original system and install an 1994 ECU with the original EFI programming, add the MAF sensor then go from there. Do you have a part # for the MAF sensor?
The car runs, idles and accelerates fine, but the CEL does not turn off and it is running rich.
What do you think of this idea?

Reason: add info
I am using both map and maf, but disconnecting the maf puts the pcm into speed density mode, which will also through a code. 94-95 pcm s are interchangeable only thing I know that is really different is the trans setup, 95 has a pwm for torque converter lockup where 94 has a simple on off type switch, putting 95 pcm on 94 trans will cause issues with lockup and ultimately tear up trans, you really need to get that cord for laptop hookup, getting into the pcm and looking at settings is the best way to sort his out
Darren: Could you PM me the info for the Laptop Cable and the software to access the settings in my ECM? If I can get in, it should give the the info I need. I know for sure that my engine is a 1994 and the ECM I got with it is year unknown. The OEM ECM is # 16188051 but I have no numbers on or inside the cover on mine. I believe this ECM crosses over to the Firebird 5.7L and the Caprice 5.7L.
I can get a used one in Titusville for $80.
Appreciate it.
For some reason pms aren’t working on phone copy and paste giving me issues as well, but if you Google scan9495, you will find post on camaroz28.com that links to the download
I will get my laptop out in a bit and open scan 9495 so you can see everything it does, will also open up tuner print do you can see how that works too
Swapping injector size is a simple click Top speed limited, 255 is maxed Set idle Speed All super easy to do in tuner pro Trans shift points, easily adjusted Turning off vats is this simple
Darren. Thanks a lot. I saw the Scan9495 available to download. I did not do it as yet because I have a laptop that I use when I am in my garage. I will download it on that one. I will also go ahead and purchase the ALDL to Laptop cable in a couple of days.
Thanks again.
I picked up a '94 ECM and a MAF from a JY in Lakeland yesterday. The JY said the car came in as a runner, but I do not know whether they are good. The JY has a 72 hour return policy.
What I do not know is whether the ECM is VATS enabled and if it is then the car may not start. At least that is what I think. I will install it today and see what happens.
If that is the case, I will have to wait for the ALDL interface cable to arrive before I go any further.
