Default Hood insulation project

I thought I’d share a recent project on my ‘74 XJ12.

They sell hood insulation kits, and this is about the same price if you’re buying everything new but I liked the look of this hood insulation mat from a R129 Mercedes.

I glued large diameter insulation clips to the hood with 3M 4200. You could also use any adhesive of your choice and polyurethane sealants are available at home improvement stores and they also stick to anything.

I also used 3M 80 contact adhesive, which is for rubber and vinyl. Mandatory in this application because of the foam insulation.

after gluing the clips to the hood I drilled out the center of those same clips to make a “washer” and that slid over the barbs of the
clips glued to hood. You could probably get away with just contact adhesive since the edges are secured in a built-in channel but it’s an easy addition to include the clips.

For a Series 3, just get a panel of 1/4" thick insulation used in residential a/c air handler units and cut it to fit. No adhesive, no tape. The factory never glued it.
