How many pounds of r12?
I remember about 40 oz. total (3 and a half 12 oz. cans) from my days of repairing A/C systems in the 80s and 90s, but might be a few ounces different????
If you are using ACTUAL R12 and not Freeze 12 then watch the pressures and sight glass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was it deliberately emptied of gas, or has it all leaked out ? If it was me, I would have it checked for leaks by an air con specialist, then regassed. I watched a chap test my Maxda Xedos for leaks a few years ago using high pressure nitrogen. Fortunateley there were none !

YES! 134a can be a better substitute, and has a leak sealer in it ,along with compressor oil.
Vacuum down ,then install 134a, i do it to all my older cars.
most imprortant its much less cost.

The car sat for 5 years then I found the compressor was shot so now. I took the old compressor out and haven't put the new one in yet. I assume there is no juice in it now if there is no compressor attached...
According to the bottom of the following page, it takes 3.4 pounds:

Replace any o-rings that are disturbed by disconnecting of lines.
Borrow a vacuum pump and use it to fully evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes, an hour is better. This gets all the water out and promotes better performance and longer life. You can sometimes get these pumps from auto parts stores loaner tool programs. Some AutoZone stores have them, but not all. Check with your local store, and ask if any of their sister stores have a wider selection of loaner tools that includes the vacuum pump for A/C work.
