Hello everyone,
I am in the final steps of preparing my XJ6 S1 for the body shop and I have to remove the door glasses. However these ones are stuck in the window channel at their base as the sealing rubber after 53 years is acting like glue !
Do you have any option/idea on how I could losen the whole assembly in order to remove the glasses ?
Thanks
Bertrand

on my front quarter light glass, I used a small grinding wheel/ball on a dremel tool to take out a layer of the sealant so that I could add a thin layer of new sealant on top as a cosmetic fix. I suppose you could just keep grinding it away to free it.
I'm thinking of a similar process to removing a suspension bushing, you need to get some amount of material out to give some space for the window to move in the channel

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the tip. However for door glasses there's no room to fit dremel tool to access the whole length unfortunately, but I keep that in mind when I'll reach the quarter light glasses
Cheers

Hi, I've never had or worked on anything but Series 3 models, but I did work at a window factory putting double pane glass panels together ( frame with glue between panes ). If a window needed to be disassembled, we would spray the joint with methyl alcohol ( used for cleaning the glass ) while cutting the glue with a razor blade ( usually held in a painters scraper handle ). If you can find the screwdriver type handle scraper like shops use to remove the old inspection sticker from the windshield, that might work even better.
Hope that's helpful !

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your answer. I believe I'll move toward a "chemical" solution in order to soften the old rubber sealing as I barely have access to the window channel. I'll use a long brush to spread the chemical (probably some paint stripper) at the bottom of the glass and on both sides if possible!
Happy Holydays

Oh, I misunderstood, you're talking about the main glass. Originally Posted by Bertrand44117

Why do you want to remove the glass from the frame?
The car is going to the body shop and will be sand blasted so I have to remove all parts the blasting could damage and that includes any glass/glazing and chrome. It's quite a long process and I'm hitting the end with the doors and the need to remove their glasses.
I'll try the stripper any time soon now and post the result

Hi Bertrand,
If I am understanding your situation correctly, you need to remove the window glass In preparation for paint, but currently they are still inside the doors?
If this is correct, you should not need to remove the glass from the bottom channel to remove it from the door. After removing the regulator from the channel and removing the upper chrome section from the window frame, the glass should lift out complete with lower channel in place.

Hi Andy,
Yes you're right!
As I don't have any clue how to remove the whole thing, you're the first to provide me with a clue!
I guess it is slightly different between the front and the rear doors?
BTW how do you remove the chromes? Are they snapped, glued, both?
Thanks
Bertrand

The upper chrome piece of the window frame is held to the uprights by small countersunk head screws. Once these are removed it should lift off.
OK Thanks
I'll keep you posted

Might I urge you invest in a workshop manual.
I suggest "Repair Operation Manual - XJ6-Sovereign".
This is very specific on what to do and where to go. Cases like your window glass removal is dealt with on Pages 76-11 to 76-13.
Again and again, I have used this manual to sort out not only my XJs but friends as well.
Cheers

Thanks Bill Mac,
I have the workshop manual in hand but it's missing simple tricks, i.e. how to remove the chrome parts without ruining them!!
If you still have your manual, would you mind to scan the appropriate pages and forward them to me?
Thanks anyway
Regards

Sorry Bertrand
MY manual is quite thick and I could not get a decent scan on those pages.
I suggest you ask around to see if others might have a copy of the manual for sale.
Cheers
