Default I hit a bump and the jag died and wont start

Hello, I was going down the road the other day and hit a huge bump in the semidarkness of dawn. The first thing I noticed was the cigarette lighter quit working because I have a dash cam and it shut off. As I was messing with that trying to get it to work I slowed down to turn into a driveway and realized the car had died. Well, I've had my fair share of stalls so I popped her into neutral, still coasting, and tried to crank it. Dead on the key. Since it's an import I thought hey, maybe jags cant start in neutral so I came to a stop and put her in park. Still nothing. No dash lights, no engine, no nothing. We tried to put it in neutral to push it off the road but the gear shifter would not move out of park. In the end, while we were waiting on the tow, I pulled the shifter back as far as I could and disengaged the parking brake enough to move it a few yards. While we waited on the tow we started checking fuses. In the end we checked each and every fuse in the car to no avail. My mechanic is completely flabbergasted so I came here for help.

To break it down, here's what's wrong:
  • dead on the key, will not start
  • No engine
  • No instrument panel
  • No accessory/cigarette lighter
  • Will not come out of park
  • Fuses all good
Please help, both myself and my mechanic are at our wits end. Please don't let my dream of owning a jag die

If your car is the XJ from 1968-1986 then it is highly likely the severe bump tripped the inertia switch. On RH drive cars this is found on the left side behind a small cover on the passenger compartment side in front of the door aperture.

Look at #8 in this old post: -

But, if you are still lurking . . . Fraser's explanation is also pertinent for the XJ40s, X308 and beyond.

Cheers,

Ken
