I've tracked that wire to where it enters the taped bundle of wires and seems fine.

Power is only coming through the red/blue.Both times with just lights on and with lights and ignition on......

I'll have to do some mulling

Ok,I may have some light at the end of the tunnel.
I traced all the wires you guys mentioned and all seem fine.
Does anyone know what and where the two wires(white/purple and green/purple)that come from the ignition stem, not behind the ignition go,because when disconnected the panel lights etc work with ignition and lights turned on,without blowing a fuse.

Purple/green goes to the seat belt buzzer/warning light unit (black rectangular box with what looks like a speaker grille, near LH fuse panel)

Purple/white goes to the door lamp/pillar lamp circuit

Now its starting to make sense. The front passenger door light button has been pushed in ,totally.
I have to go to Canberra for the weekend, when I get back I'll fix it and let you know what happens.
Thanks Doug.

Yahoo, on it! The issue defined. Now the fix?

I found that door post switches are very finicky. I had mine apart
once. I thought cleaning and tightening would do it. Naah, It
is lateral slop that appear as wear from decades of in ands out!!

But it completes the ground leg of the pillar lamp circuit??? Not a likely place for a hot to ground short????

Inside the buzzer???

When I was having my travails that finaly led to an ignition switch replacement, I found that buzzed connection had been removed, by a PO. He/she was apparently annoyed by the noise!!

On replacing the switch I reconnected it. With my ears, no issue atall!!!

Sorry guys, been busy.

Ok,there is no buzzer box, there isn't even any wires to show there was one.
I fixed the door light button, works but still no change with the issue. I did find a dodgy connection on the back of the fuse box for the pillar lights, fixed and still no change.

The pillar lights work when the without the wires connected to the ignition,I assume the seat beat warning light works also, can't be sure as my dash is a mess atm.

I'm no expert( if I was, I would've nutted this out by now)but I am leaning to what Carl suggested,Ignition.
I have another one on the donor car,but what is the trick getting it off and on?

Well, caveats.

1. What ever it takes, find an S57 Wire Schematic. If no luck, PM me, and I'll scan a page or so for you from mine.

2. Are you sure that the ignition switch in your donor car any better
than the one in the subject car!!! Bad for bad will merely confuse the issue.

A bit fuzzy at the moment, but, my recollection of the buzzer is a round device of about 3" and about 1" thick.

The wires from the ignition switch are off to the side and seem like
an after thought. If indeed, the buzzer is the short, merely unplugging that harness should fix the issue, and all you lose is the buzz.

Swapping the switch id fiddly, but quite doable.

If you choose to accept that mission, open a new thread and I and probably others will guide you.

Ok, the Jag is back together now.Thought I'd better put it back together before I started forgetting where things went.
I decided to just disconnect the to wires from the ignition rather than replace the ignition as those wires seem to have no purpose other than to short a fuse.

I did fix a lot of other things while the car was gutted, like, the fibre optics, put a new Alpine system in,power windows and sunroof, door light button, just to name a few.

I would like to thank all you guys for your help, knowledge and guidance to get to the bottom of my issue...THANKS HEAPS....

All the best,

Mark.
