Default Jaguar's support mate.

Another victory, almost. Most aged cars, including Jaguars need support
vehicles.

Mine is my venerable 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For a combination of reasons, it has been dormant since April, 2016.

Ready to return to the road. I had replaced the battery and fired the engine on occasion to keep the fluids alive.

Insurance, SMOG inspection and registration to fix.

DMV computers down delayed getting a temp move cert to get the Smog.
Done. Odd options there. Paid the fee for the year. A gamble. Flunk SMOG, then...

Got past SMOG. Bad gas cap flunked evaporation test.... Oh, station
offered options, I go elsewhere and get one and then test is complete.
I was shown the crack in mine. Or, buy theirs at twelve bucks. Easy, deal!!!

Oh, h... the key will not turn on!!! Wrong key..... They found mine.
Done.

Need to go back to DMV and get my tags. Why, they could not be mailed to me. No choice. Await an appointment or take my chances...

PITA to the umpteenth power.

But, OTH it passed, OK for another two years....

I'm Really glad it went so well for you, Carl!
About first thing next spring I'll have to take Nix for the ordeal. She is NOT looking forward to that!

Strange men putting their hands on her without even a proper introduction is not something she tolerates well. Last time, she was so offended she rejected their first attempt so they Failed her!

Elinor:

Thanks.

One more trip to the dreaded DMV needed to get my sticker. I'll check on line for appointment. If not too far off, I'll set it up. If a ways off, I'll just pop in early AM.

Nix is on the verge of exemption. Lucky gals, the both of you!!

Having lived in California for 29 years I well remember the trials and tribulations of getting a car 'smogged' and registered. Sometimes a breeze, other times quite stressful

Cheers

Doug:

Yeah, I told the disinterested DMV clerks that leaving the state
was an option. He, more involved with a conversation with the gal
in the next stall. I, a mere distraction.

Another good tried and true Canadian custom is to not start engines that are in storage, no matter how long or short a period of time. Does far more harm than good.

Hello Mikey . . . and +1 to your comment re start vs no start while in storage. The extent of damage wrought by each cold start is enormous . . . and yet another reason why "country" cars can achieve far greater miles than their "city" siblings.

Suddenly, your comments brought our racing prep protocol from the late 60s and 70s flooding back -
  • minimum run time while "starting and standing" in the pits;
  • 2 warm up laps (7-8 "tenths") to bring tyres and fluids up to temp;
  • 1 "race pace" lap (9-10 tenths"), followed immediately by . . .
  • 1 "qualifying" lap (only 2 if baulked), followed by . . .
  • 1 "warm down" lap, followed by return to pits, immediate bonnet up or engine cowls off to prevent heat soak, then switch off.
Provided lubrication specs, pressures and temps are optimal (and you're right . . . cold starts provide neither) most well designed engines thrive on hard, high speed work . . . but hate that grinding wear of each initial start.

Cheers,

Ken

1. Solved, at a price. I called DMV in Sacramento. On hold for a spell.
But, the elevator music wasn't all that bad. Some nice guitar work. Real notes, no wailing... Phone on speaker. I hoping it's battery would last.
Reading on the computer.

Nice gal. she understood my reluctance. Her screen showed I did all that was needed. Passed SMOG. Had move permit, paid fee. We agreed, why not mail? Done. Tags on the way. In the interim, I have all my paper work in the Jeep in the unlikely event I get pulled over. Not likely, unless I mess up.

2. There is a peril in start and stop. But, I lessened it by allowing it to idle a few minutes and reach full operating temperature. Leaving it fallow for extended periods risk allowing all the oil to drain off the parts, the bores, particularly. But, continued use is best, no question.

Anyway, the Jeep peeps contentedly....
