Default Location of Temperature Sender

My temperature gauge is not functioning, so I took a look under the hood, and noticed that the wire was just hanging in mid-air.

As best as I can tell, the sender is mounted upside-down on the pipe running over/through the intake to the heater valve, more or less above the distributor. Is that right? I do not currently have a manual handy that I can reference.

The car is a 1971 4.2 Series I.

Thank you,

Tom
