Default LT77 or R380 transmission

Will an LT77 or R380 transmission work in a 1987 XJ6 Series 3? What are the pros and cons? What prices and availability? What is needed to set up an American XJ6 for the clutch pedal and linkages or cables? Where are good places to look for one of these transmissions?

I would prefer not to put a Japanese transmission in the car. It would be good to find and use what Jaguar used.

Thanks for the advice, opinions and information.

No idea if they would work, but those are manual transmissions commonly used behind a Land Rover V8. I'm sure they would handle anything the inline 6 could dish out.

Good people to contact in the Land Rover world for parts like this would be,

paulgrant@mac.com excellent parts guy, great service good prices really goes the extra mile.

Will Tillery, at www.roverguy.com also excellent service and good prices as well and shipping so quick you'll think he has mystical powers.

Roverdoc out in cali is good to but I can't think of his contact info off the top of my head. I'll dig it up later and post it up.

Stay away from car cannibal and rover cannibal, real bad history with those two places.

Jaguar offered a manual XJ6 which used the LT77 (IIRC)

The R380 was/is basically the replacement for the LT77.

From building and competing in god knows how many Land and Range Rovers and Hybrid specials. In my experience the LT77 suffered from weak syncro's and layshaft bearings.

These were also fitted in a whole assortment of cars and trucks a quick Google will show you.

If you do decide to do this conversion you will need a lot more than just the box. You will need the complete pedal boxes including clutch master cylinder.

No idea where you would find a conversion kit.

You might find more availability from searching for breakers from the UK because I don't know if manuals were even offered for sale in the US.

I suspect you might find it easier to checkout GM conversions in the US.

Have a look at jcna.com and Jaguar Specialities.

To answer your question, IMHO there are no 'pros' only 'cons'.

The lt77 and R380 were offered in the range rover and discovery in the states respectively.

For the rest of the parts I have no idea if you could retro-fit the cylinders from a land rover to work. The pedal assemblies you would be on your own for though. Those two I listed before should be able to locate a tranny for you though.
