X300's are not my forte, but I see you have no response to this so here are my thoughts:
On an XJ-6 check the airflow side and all induction connections.
If yours was an '87 instead of a '97 it would be almost a certainty it would be an air connection before the airflow meter. Just push it back on and tighten the hose clamp and off you go. I would look for a similar situation on yours.
Be curious to know if this works, I have considered going "modern" lately.
