Lump passes Californa Smog retest
My 83 SIII has been resting in the garage since late October of 2017. It flunked CA's "snap throttle smoke test". A very subjective visual only test.
But, OK on the more objective dyno and sniff testing,
Son and I diagnosed as dirty air filter!!! A K&N "knock off". Fix A few baths in strong detergent/water mix. Light test OK.
Day before yesterday, I got myself amped up after a DMV officer trial.
Got a temporary moving cert. Huge mess at the DMV!!! I had an appointment. Awful, but far better than those with a wait in a huge line folks.
Nice lady helped me begin the process. I commented my dismay and thoughts of moving to Idaho. She agreed. So, I said "let's go, my Jeep is in the parking lot". Alas, she declined!!!
Next stop. another nice lady. Offered two days to move. I asked for three and got them. Dates blank, my option!!! I commented, this much for an 88 year old. She responded, "Nonsense, you look better than a lot of the 44 year olds here".
Me, out of steam, got a drive in lunch and home !
Day before yesterday, the 13th of March. Reenergized. SMOG station bound !!! Raining heavily. OK, might be a good thing. Less folks there !
Disappointment. Jaguar starter relay chattered loudly, but no crank and fire !!! Put battery on the Smart charger. 8 hours and it was 100%. Me not so much.
Yesterday, the 14th of March. Raining cats and dogs again. Stopped at gas station to tank up. Best not quit in the middle of the test and for fresh fuel.
Good moves, I'm up next. Same statin as last year. Two small issues.
Tech advised as to location of the BAR sticker. left rear door post.
And then, open the gas caps. I opened the lids. "Where are they?"
I demonstrated. OK. Efficacy of two tanks and 24 gallons discussed.
The machine then responded. A PASS !!!!
Caveat, the tech told me the hydrocarbons are at the limit. Rich run fouled the cats ? Or ?
I may check numbers back a few ears or just defer for two years, next time.
For now, all is well!!!
Sorta, Jeep is due? Idaho, Texas ???

Carl... glad you made it through. Never give up. Little room left in CA for gas powered cars. Plan is full electric by 2040. Those who look forward seldom look back.
Electric is the future until it isn't. Check out this 1959 Artist sci-fi rendering. At the same time peace and a highway to Russia were envisioned too. LOL!! How'd that work out. I guess those plans got scrapped in late 1962.

I had the same high hydrocarbons when trying to get my old truck, 1984 Ford 150 with 302 V8 to pass CA smog test. Even though the catalytic converter passed a test at the muffler shop as the first step in fixing the problem.. I replaced it as the last resort (three re tests with all else replaced).
Put on a new one and drove to the smog test, truck not even warmed up.. now had very low hydrocarbons... just a thought for the "next test".

Thanks guys.
2040 ! Not likely an issue for me!
Yeah, 2020 might require two new cats to pass. For now, I'm not going to think about. Although the weather was messy yesterday, I went to market in the Jaguar. Very pleasing for each of us... Even the wipers parked on command.
But, ugh the Jeep s up. Gotta get that done soon!!!!

Stress plus more $'s !!!

Yup!
Jaguar is purring. Interesting, though. Behaves better with battery at full charge than it does on a marginal number!! I suspect a new battery will be needed, as usual, sooner than later !
Yes, Elinor. you are right. Do it. On my agenda for Monday. I thought of today, but daughter is coming over. Better do some pickup work in the house!!!
Just checked on Billy. Out sunning himself. Smart goat.

Sun is out. Just might play with my toys in the garage a bit. Some disarray there to clean up. Jack, air hose, diagnostic tools, manuals, battery charger, et.
And, I've a chunk of interesting tree pruned branch. Out door wall scounce with a solar powered LED! I've doe a couple of singles. This one might work out as a dual LED lamp support.
