Mistery:Automatic transmission

Hello,
I´m triying to identify this gearbox. Does anyone know wich type is? I have been told that is for a XJ6,but nothing else.... ( bw 8? 12? 35? 65? 66 ?..)

As far as I know.....

Model 65 and 66 were aluminum case the 12, was iron case...so a magnet might help narrow things down. Not sure about the 8 and 35, but my guess is iron case.

From various pics on the internet it looks like the 65/66 had much more pronounced ribbing on the top of the case.

Is there a vacuum modulator? The 65/66 did not use a vacuum modulator. The 12 did. Not sure about the 8 and 35.

To me, it looks like a BW12 from an XJ12 (Series 2)
I've seen the "fins" on the torque converter before, from a 75 XJ12 (i think)..
Looking at the parts manual, everything seems to be the same..
The original part number for the BW12 was C36712.

Just a guess, but hope it narrows down the search for you..

A clue...
It looks exactly like a transmission I just pulled out of a 1975 XJ12C and they used BW12's too. Same tail, same vented torque converter, and same input flange. Mine has oil coller lines on the right hand side, a vacuum modulator on the left side and a dip stick on on the front of the pan. It also says 12-1 right on the top....so it's clearly a BW Model 12-1. They probably cast the number large and on the top for easy viewing during production at the factory.

Hello ,
Thank you very much to all of you for your help. I have confirmed that it is a BW 12 for a 4.2 series 2.
Now I have some doubts...... I have a XJ6 4.2 Series 1, year 1973. Would this bw 12 series 2 box and converter fit in the car directly or would be neccessary any modifications?

Another question , I also have the possibility of fitting a BW 65 or 66 instead. Is there a lot of difference in performance or durability etc compared with the BW 12? Does it need as well modifications when fitting?

The Type 12 is one tough transmission, it needed to be to handle the V12.

It will fit where a Type 12 was removed from, no issues.

The 65/66 were a lighter trans, and used a cable to the throttle linkage for gear change/kickdown facility. This would be needed to fit that to a BW12 car.

The 12 used a vac modulator for gear change etc, and a simple hose is all that is required, which is already present in a BW12 car.

I did a BW65 to a BW12 retro loooooong ago, and it was simple, due to all that kickdown stuff not being needed. The other way is certainly do-able, but a S2 6Cyl throttle linkage will be needed.

I would use a 12 over a 65/66 any day. Parts are getting hard to find for both versions, so no biggy there.

Grant's right....go with the 12.

The 65-66 is just barely up to the task on a good day. Not that it's a bad trans but it was better suited for the smaller engined, lighter cars. BMW, Volvo, and a few others used it in addition to Jaguar.

As a tidbit I'll mention that the 12 was used in many V8 American cars. Ford called it the "FMX".

The "R" in the part number of your trans means "Rebuilt", by the way.
