My 87 XJ6 with the 4.2 is not getting fuel. It gets fuel up to the fuel rail but will not start. It has spark and will start off starter fluid. Ive tried the interia cutoff switch, fuel rail doesnt seem to be clogged. Any ideas what it could be?
For context the car stalled on me when driving. Also appears alternator does not charge.

I think the first thing I would check is fuel pressure at the fuel rail (or where ever the Schrader Valve is located) and then the fuel pressure regulator. With a helper, do you hear fuel returning to the active tank when the pump is running?

I saw a case similar to this in a jag workshop a few years ago. I used to help them on a part time basis to sort out electrical problems as my background included aircraft electrical engineer.
Although the engine turned over and spark was present it would not start however it responded to starting fluid being squirted into the inlet manifold.
The problem turned out to be an older battery which was really dropping volts when under cranking loads.
There was simply not enough volts to drive the injectors.
A new battery fixed the problem.
In your case with the alternator not working then I suggest the battery is too low to activate the injectors.
An alternative is to jumper the car to another with its engine running which should produce roughly 14 volts which should be enough to activate the injectors.
Cheers
