New to Jags. XJ6 Runabillity problems
hi all. im an import mechanic and work on them small I4's in hondas and such. well my girlfriends dad has this XJ6 1987. inline 6.
well he asked me if i wanted to see if i could get it going or he'd tow it off. its a nice car i think i like jags now. so i couldnt let him tow it away. well i did just a run through kinda getting to know a jaguar car.
i put a new battery in it and it fired up. but it idles REAL low and wants to die. he said some moron steam cleaned the motor and shorted something out. wondering if its a common thing in these cars. so i ran through his list of concerns and runabillity is the main. the oil is sorta mixed with gas. so somehow theres gasoline getting down there. the car runs hot so im thinkin it need a new water pump.
but as the list goes on. im more concerned about the engine runability. its not good. like its not getting enough fuel. when you accelerate white smoke comes out of the pipes. the guy that sprayed the engine said he messed up the fuel press. reg. and the big black air flow meter in the intake hose. i could get this car running back to good but im not sure what some of the commons problems and locations of these jaguars?
he also said if it was not worth it to fix. he wanted to know about a new year chevy motor, and i told him ive seen them with 350s and v8's.
i was wondering if like a GM v6 would be worht it considering the gas prices around here.
let me know what you think please. i can fix stuff but im not familiar with jags.
thanks
