Thanks for letting me onto the forum. I am from South Africa and have a beautiful vehicle which has not been on the road since 2003. I have a problem though. The engine runs smoothly BUT the fuel tanks are shot. I need to replace them with a fuel gauge and pump each. Can anyone tell me how I remove the old tanks because they are stuck bigtime. I cannot seperate the top cap part from the bottom tank part. Any advice will be appreciated.

 

First-make sure the hose is removed. It's hard to see; with the cap open it points toward the front of the car.
It may take some wiggling and prying to extricate both the hose and the cap.
Twisting helps a lot, especially after applying WD40 or other penetrating oil.




A small, thin wonder bar works wonders.

 

the chromed cap has a pin that goes accross the cap from one side to the other. The pin is located at the pivoting point of the cap, at the rear.

to remove the cap you need a pick tool or a nail of the same diameter as the pin. .With the cap open, you need to tap the pin out with a small hammer. If using a nail, flatten the tip so it makes good contact with the pin.

if the fill mouth of the tank is stuck to the underside of the body, and you have loosened everything else per the service manual instructions, the you need a rubber mallet to tap the tank down. There is a seal around the filler mouth that can get stuck.
