Thumbs down PARK release w/ engine off

Recently found a 1984 SJ6 VDP in a junkyard. No body damage, all glass intact, engine, tranny and rear end in place. Trip computer, radio, hood ornament, battery, and key set seem to be the only missing items so far. Contacted last owner. He could not keep up the the continuing maintenance and finally parked the car because of a bad fuel pump. I am hoping to salvage the car. Lots to learn. I have been a MBZ and BMW guy but had MG, Triumph and minimal Jag experience early in my life. Today's problem: How do I override the gear shift interlock and get out of park?

An '84 won't have a shift interlock. Something must be jammed up.

Series IIIs are great cars. The most modern of all antique automobiles.

Cheers

Thanks Doug,
I haven't tried to move the shifter yet. Negotiations with junkyard still in progress. I had assumed (wrongly) that the car would have a shift interlock. Thanks for your rapid response.

Sounds like a find. To me it seems that the negotiations might be the big hurdle. The salvor sees the car as money to be made. Did the PO tell you
how much he got for the car? Information is everything.

Then, guesstimate what bits will be sold and for how much. As I last heard, scrap steel prices are low. So, crushing of the carcass will be a negative.

And, include a fee to haul it to your place. Towing costs are up!!!!

The missing bits can be found.

Good hunting.

don't sweat the trip computer, they are useless.

the 1984 never had a hood ornament, some owners added them because they wanted to be like Vlad The Impaler.

install an Interstate bhattery, these cars like steady juice.

the pumps are still made and available.

the radio can be replaced with something modern unless you still play cassettes like me.

But it does have a steering wheel lock so you won't be able to steer it

Trip computer easy to replace and cheap to buy second hand. Radio easy replacement. Hood ornament (leaper) is a matter of taste, but if the holes already exist you'll be better off replacing it - easy to obtain, not expensive, and avoids the headache of filling the holes and re-painting the entire panel.
