Hi Bob,
I would try David at Everyday XJ , he parts out Jaguars and has great prices. If you want new parts, SNG Barratt or most of the other specialty vendors should have them. I might be wrong but I think the parking brakes are the same for all XJ6 Series, XJS, and maybe even late E's rear-ends if they have inboard brakes ( Real experts please correct me if wrong ! ). You will probably need the cable as well to make the installation easier, as they work by being pulled together. I'll post the parts diagram for the XJ6 Series 3 below.
Part Number 8016 is the pivot pin, 2 per caliper, and secures the whole handbrake caliper to the main caliper. If you look at your calipers you should see the securing lugs on the caliper. The upper lugs have a threaded hole and the lower lugs secure the bottom of the pins. This mechanism can be a real PITA unless installed with long-lasting lube on the pins. The amount of movement of each caliper half is very small so corrosion can build up and wreck efficient operation. As I understand it, most US drivers never use the hand brake, relying on the detent in the auto transmission, so the whole assembly gets neglected. Here in England the MOT test, our annual roadworthiness test, tests the efficiency of the handbrake brake so they tend to be maintained properly.
You're welcome Bob,
Like Fraser pointed out they can be a pain, especially to install on a XJ6 if the rear end assembly is still in the car ( they are at the top so you have to work by feel / use a mirror -- been there done that ). One rear end I pulled at the junkyard had new rotors installed and apparently during reassembly the mechanic missed the hole in the handbrake halve without the arm. It had flipped around on the adjuster bolt and ground down the pad at an angle, not to mention the fact the brake would have been completely nonfunctional at that point !
When I owned my first XJ6 in the late 90's I became a firm believer in using the handbrake when parked after leaving work to find the car 40 feet from where I left it ! The BW66 tranny has a small and apparently undersized pawl to lock it in park which broke and thus let the car "self park" without a computer ! I was just happy it didn't hit anyone or their car in the process. I had already cleaned and lubed the mechanism so it was in good shape and worked properly. It would lock up the rear wheels if on gravel etc.but I'm not sure how well it would handle a stuck open throttle emergency for which I would try to shift to neutral etc.
Also I think I saw one of the vendors selling Kevlar pads, not sure if that would make it work better or just make the pads last longer.
Thank you Fraser , I really appreciate the input , and to Kudzu as well ! I will be doing the work , after part purchase , myself with the rear end in the car . My cobra is a 5 speed and left in gear won't roll but pushed into neutral it certainly will ,
Thanks again , Bob
