Default The Pony and the Cat

This morning, Nix and I want to town as usual, and as usual she was all shined up as any self-respecting girl would be when headed for town.

As we were on the Passing Lane, doing our usual thing of passing all slower vehicles, I noticed a snarly looking RED one hurrying to catch up but it didn't pass even though there was plenty of room before the end of the lane.

It was a newish Mustang, one with droopy eyes. (As I was driving I obviously didn't get any pictures in real time.)

Looked pretty good actually.

As we continued on, doing about 70mph as usual, the 'Stang stuck with us a polite distance back. Opportunities to pass us were ignored. Hmm, I thought. Are we being followed? I never know what Nix will attract.

When we got to the freeway in town, traffic was light and he pulled out sllooowwllyyy to go around. Aha, I thought, we're getting the once-over.

He (I'm assuming it was a he) lingered as he passed,

and took a good long look.

About that time I look over, smiled and waved -- and he took off like a shot!! (They Always do that! Definitely a he.) As my exit was coming up I let him go and didn't even offer to play. We probably would have lost but it would have been fun while it lasted.

I Luv a good road race!

Elinor:

Why would not a healthy guy in a red Mustang not be intrigued
by a great looking red headed gal in a great looking
black Jaguar????

OTH, it could've been a mere V6 and not up to older GM
V8 power.

But, I do recall a talented gal pro racer putting a "Shelby"
prepared V6 pony car through it's paces. she was impressed!!!

Thank you, Carl, but he couldn't see me as driver when hurried to catch up. It's all about the car anyway, I know that! It's my most important fashion accessory!

He didn't pull away like it was a V6, WAAAYYY too much speed too quick. Besides, as I mentioned, my exit came up and I peeled off.

However, husband has some Really Nice heads under his desk that he says are for Nix at her next overhaul. That engine is leaking at every (cork!) gasket anyway, but until it's a whole lot worse, or something breaks, or she doesn't pass SMOG, I'll drive what I have.

Trans needs work too, it has a 2-3 runaway. It'll eventually kill itself and when it does, the whole drive train will be updated, with a Much Hotter 350!

Elinor:

Didn't think you'd be at the yard job in the rain. And, Friday off, all right !!!

That SBC and 350 are tough as nails and will soldier on for eons, slips, leak, clunks and all.

And, when that time comes, hotter ABC, 4 speed tranny and fuel injection!!!

Went to VA. Routine lab work I've been procrastinating on...
In between rain squalls. Jaguar purred. Canteen lunch. Corned beef, potaoes and cabbage. Not the greatest, but very decent, and best yet, not cooked by me.

Took the shuttle around the park lot to find my car. Amazed, driver ID'd my "brown Jaguar" easily.....

I'll take it easy this PM.

No, it will NOT be EFI! I don't Like fuel injection (besides the fact it would mean another trip to the BAR ref)! It will be the same block but tweaked and highly tuned carbed, with a nice pair of heads.

I've had 2 fuel injected engines, and just as she sits right now, in her weak and underpowered state, Nix runs Rings around both of them! I stick my foot in it and power is on Instantly; non or this taking it under advisment until the phase of the moon is right. I let off, and power is also gone Instantly! In California, that simply does Not happen with EFI.

The Mustang has just been released here following the demise of our locally constructed Ford. Seems to be quite popular apparently with a backlog of orders waiting.

It's quite popular Everywhere, Steve!
They're pretty hot cars; some of them are Really hot cars depending how much ya wanna spend.

Their popularity is exactly why I don't want one. They've become quite common, whereas a nicely turned out Classic of any marque stands out in the crowd.

I have to agree. The Mustang newbie models still can't turn heads like their '60's forebears. I believe their popularity is mainly about carting around the legendary Pony badge, otherwise there are way better engineered and styled alternatives in the new car line up (IMO of course!).

Well, I guess it's subjective Steve. If I wanted to invest in some automotive coupe finery, my list wouldnt be likely to include a new Mustang. But I would consider spending the equivalent on a great classic Mustang (among many other options).

Well...maybe, maybe not

The present day Mustang V6 is 300+ horsepower ....so they're pretty darn quick ! 0 to 60 in less than 6 seconds

Cheers

Nor mine, but just a few days ago I had the opportunity to spend time behind the wheel of one of these....

Winding Road | Driven: 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302

....and I gotta admit it was a real treat. Fun, fast, very sharp cornering and steering, surprisingly comfortable and easy to drive....and fantastic exhaust sound

Cheers

Thats the loop I went through buying the Jag , I was actually looking at older OZ / US cars , and although they looked great they were frankly pretty ordinary to drive handling and braking wise. I find most modern cars pretty bland an uninteresting until the $ get very high. About the only one I openly lust after is this one

Yes indeed, several contenders in the fringe supercar arena weaken my knees! The perfect world would see all of us in possession of our ideal classic and modern. But then every morning we'd still have to choose between them!

I agree with all of that Steve, when I thought of buying an older car again I was looking at old Holdens(GM) but stuff I paid less than $1000 for in the 80's (65-75 models) were all 15k +.

So I got to thinking I always wanted a series 1 XJ, why not spend the coin on that. It was pleasant surprise when I started searching and the prices were ranging from $1000- $7000 and the price had no bearing on the condition, just what the seller thought they were worth.

I nearly bought 72 Daimler with 350, new paint and leather for 5K, but too slow to pull the trigger. Was driving home to discuss it when i got call saying it was sold. Really happy now I got one with an XK engine.

As for the Mustangs, love them all. Old to new, except those hideous mid 70's jobs. Pic below is the actual Daimler I nearly had.

Thats funny, I also nearly ended up with a Daimler, the MK2 equivalent whatever Daimler called it. It would have given me a totally different Jagdaim experience to the one I have enjoyed so far.

Same, I would have had a lump like you. And it would have been a whole other experience.
But I had the choice to go lump recently and decided the XK path was the way for me. Loving the new donk!

Yeah, Elinor, avoiding another BAR is reason enough to keep the carb.

My LT1 doesn't mess around analyzing when I stomp on it, it gets right to it. I am espcialy intrigued by the knock detector. Allow max advance
in real time for fuel and temperature conditions.

And, I sure don't miss sticky float valves, setting float levels, idle screw adjustments, dried out accelerator pump leathers, etc.

I've messed with about as many carbs in a lot of critters than I care to remember.

Now, if only my stodgy lawn vacuum had FI, instead of it's quirky little carb....

But, my Honda powered SP mower has a quirky carb. A shot of ether overcomes it's "fail to choke" issue. Once going, it whacks great.
Front wheel drive. Rubberoid "tires" loosing their bite....

OTH, Way back when, son bought a sorta "ratty" 40 Ford coupe.
Roughly repowered by a 312 V8. Dual four barrel carbs. With 3speed and OD at first, then a four speed. Veeery fast. Worried the h.... outta me.
