also check the fuel hoses at the intake manifold, the hoses at the fuel rail to each injector, those hoses also dry out and deteriorate, a fuel smell will be evident, same procedure, engine running, watch each hose carefully.
I use a product called Hylomar to seal problematic fuel line connections if you ever encounter one of those.

The Hylomar product we are using now has been renamed by Permatex to Permashield #85420 fuel resistant gasket dressing & sealant, and works excellent, non-hardening etc.
The previous version was never really like the British product.
We also use the 'Right Stuff' black elastomeric rubber occasionally, sticks and seals semi-permanently. We mistakenly used it on the Mk2 cam covers, where there is nothing to wedge against for removal, very tough to get the covers off.
