rear brakes
No special tools. The hard part on that car is getting to them. If you break your arm in the right place you can swap the pads with the calipers in the car. If you need to do rotors too, pull the cage and diff down together. It's a much easier operation.
how do you know you need work in those rear brakes?
I've had my 1984 for 17 years and I've never had to touch them, except one time when I bled the system to change the fluid.

ok; if you raise the car sufficiently, with lots of support, and I mean lots of support underneath, (these cars are very heavy and you don't want the car to crush you if the supportsshould collapse), you can work the old pads out and the new ones in without releasing the rear suspension which isserious surgery.
it will either be a lot of work or a lot of contortions but it can be done in-place.
Best to have the Shop Manual handy, this is serious work and there are specific procedures to release the rear suspension if you go that way.
Shop Manuals are available for little money. Look at the FAQ here for the link tothe place that has them on special right now.
