S3 XJ12 - 235/60R15 Tire Size
Hi Gents
I know this one has been done to death, but I'm finding lots conflicting information on the web
The only tire I can get with a decent load rating locally is the 235/60R15 (looking at a BF Goodrich T/A)
I'm wondering who has had these size tires on a series 1 / 2 / 3 XJ and how successful they have been
Do they rub during normal driving? Do they rub on full lock? etc
I've read all sorts of things and varying accounts for XJS / XJ40, but its hard to nail it down for a Series 3 XJ12. I can get 225/60R15 as an option, but they are over an inch shorter in the height and I don't want to reduce the rolling diameter (its more of a highway cruiser then race car, so I'm not as worried about the sway - I also don't want to increase the rev's and I like the look of the tall tires).
I'm also aware that 235's are a little wider, but its only 9.3" on the 235's vs 8.5" on the original 215/70R15's - I don't suppose 0.4" a side is going to break the bank
Thanks
Jay

All my Series cars, and XJS's ran that spec.
Maxxis, Goodyear, Toyo, etc, whatever was a reasonable price on the day.
Never really noticed any issues.and we covered thousands of kms annually in those days.
Speedo error was negligible to me.
No wandering to speak of, just the tram tracks in Adelaide CBD gave a weird sensation, if I "just got it right" sometimes, but the driving in Adelaide CBD could be counted on one hand over 20 years.
205/70 for the 6cyls and 215/70 for the real cars, were just too damn hard., even back then.

i have 235/60/15 Dunlops SP in my 1984 XJ-6.
I might have been the first man on earth to use them in a Series 3 XJ-6 since I use rhat size since 1994.
on the technical side of things, you get a 2 mile per hour error in the speedo, i.e., if the speedo needle is at 70 mph, you are really going at 68 mph.
There is absolutely no rubbing even during hard cornering. No tire screeching either, the Dunlops hold like adhesive. I still have the original shocks in the rear and two dead Boge in the front.
The body was lowered beautifully by this size tire. Can't complain.

Many years ago I ran BFG 235/60s on my Series III as well. I had them on 15x7 aftermarket wheels. I was generally happy but I did get some tramlining...which I wasn't fond of. Not severe, though.
Will you be using the original 6" wide wheels? If so, you'll be getting quite a lot of sidewall pinch. Nothing bad will happen but you probably won't be getting the best from the tires.
Cheers

I widened the rear rims (plain steel rims, not chrome) on my Series 2 by 7/8 of an inch. It added to the back spacing. Front rims can not be widened or they will rub the upper control arms. Tires cannot be rotated with this setup.
235 60 15 fit fine on the rear with this set up. My set up was for street slicks, so I can't comment on handling in your situation.
