Default Safe Removal of Sidemarker gaskets?

The old rubber gaskets underneath the sidermaker lights on my 1972 XJ are decaying, yet extremely hard, and they don't seem to pull off. I'd greatly appreciate any tips on safe removal of the rubber that will not damage the paint or light housing, so that I can put on new rubber and reinstall... thanks much.

do you mean the black solid rubber SPACERS that contact the body and the sidemarker chromed housing? or the foam gaskets under the Lenses?

if the SPACERS, and you have removed the nuts holding the chromed housing screws, try protecting the paint by applying painter's Blue masking tape all around following the shape of the gasket/spacer, then seesawing under the gasket top to bottom, bottom to top, using either a very thin guitar string (.009 gauge), or similar wire, like very thin fishing wire.

I would first make sure that the spacers are not held behind the fender/wing by some kind of attachment. The rear ones are accessible by removing the tail lamp lenses, and then the tail lamp housings. The front ones are easier.

Thank you. Extremely helpful—and yes, I meant the spacers, so your advice is perfect. But in addition, the foam underneath the lenses has in fact hardened and breaks when touched. Does the foam serve an important purpose and actually need replacing?

you're welcome, glad it works out.

yes, the foam is a "pad" for the lens itself. you can go to any Joann's Fabrics store and they sell Foam Sheets in different colors and thicknesses, and you can trace and cut your own foam gaskets from one sheet of 9 x 11 which costs around $1.00.

Also you can apply masking tape over the dried out foam gasket and then try to pull it in one piece. To make the holes in the new foam gaskets, use a socket of the correct diameter, place the foam gasket over a piece of wood or cement, and smack the socket with a hammer to cut a perfect circle.

I don't know why they make those gaskets in Grey color, but if you make them out of White foam, the side marker lights become more visible / reflective.
