Our past lister described the use of seats from a Chrysler Pt cruisewr. roger Mbry, RIP. e iked them over the originals.
Way back when, my n79 IHc Scout II had the lousiest front bench i ever sat in. cheapo viny as well. i swapped in a pair of chrysler cordoba seats in corintian !!! I added a bit of rearward tit. Very comfoprtable.
even further back in germany, a fellow fficer improved the seat in his car. buckets. specie forgotten. Drilled more holes in the ply wood base. Added foam padding. The squab was thicker and softer. Also alloed the butt to ride a tad higher. Mre chair like.
Way back, mY T ford had the springs only. I added a blanket. Mom sewed up ma covr. My teen butt was pleased.
Tilt means a lot. My jeep has a lot of seat varationss as to position. I prefer the arms out position.

Good to hear from you again Carl, and the post I vaguely remember was of someone using a PT Cruiser seat, I just couldn't find the thread. I might be able to find a set of those up here, but color matching, fabrication, price, etc. will probably see me putting new foam in the ones I have. But you never know, winters are pretty long up here and I will need something to do.

One thing that I have found that helps immensely is to tilt the whole seat back. The effect is similar to sitting in a recliner. Just go to the hardware store and get some spacers (they are little steel cylinders) with an inside diameter that fits over the seat mounting bolts. Just put them on the front bolts between the floor and the seat rail. Get a couple 1/4" and 1/2" long ones then you can mix and match to get the right incline.

If your going to replace the front seats be sure to measure the room you have between the door sill and the transmission tunnel. Many modern seats are too wide to fit.

When I extended the rails I think I raised the front a little. I'll look at that again and see if I can raise a bit more, couldn't hurt and it would be easy to try.

Thanks

Another thing that helps my back is having a dead pedal to rest my foot on. It just keeps the spine aligned better, plus when you are zipping around curves you can push your body back into the seat to keep you from sliding around. Here is a little video I made showing how I made it.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention! Thanks for putting that tip out there, but I extended the rails of my seat to be able to stretch my legs a little more. Now my left foot sits comfortably at the end of the tunnel.

I padded the seat centers with 1/4” thick foam and some extra at the lumbar, and installed black sheepskin seat covers. So much more comfortable.

That was former member Roger Mabry, who, we were all sad to hear, died a little while back.
But if you do a forum search you will still find all his threads I'm sure.
Roger was very good at telling us just how he did stuff so you might find just the info you need.

The leather seats Darren got rid of are now in my car. When I first acquired them from Darren, the leather was hard and the seat very uncomfortable. I eventually had them refoamed and recovered with new leather and they are now very comfortable. My opinion is that when the leather gets hard it is like sitting on a wooden chair, no pliability whatsoever. With new leather and foam the seat now conforms to your body. Just a thought.

I couldn't afford to replace my seat covers with leather, I'm not a fan of leather anyway. But I completely agree with what you are saying. My wife's Escalade has leather, but it seems like saddle grade stuff. No softness at all, but it wears like iron.

At times, we forget that leather and vnyl are different materials.

Our jaguars use both.

Only once did aI get a section f cow hide. No hair, Nicely tanned. i made a console for m 79 IHC Scout II. Covered the "cubby: box lid and sides in ral leather. It came out great.

My console is still vinyl, but I used a nice piece of black tanned deer hide on the ski jump.
