Sender unit in Series 1 and Series 2 fuel tank

Sender unit in Series 1 and Series 2 fuel tank
Hi guys - a quick question.
Our left hand tank is rotten through and through and whatever rotted the tank also destroyed the sender unit. It seems as if I can get hold of a Series 2 one - would I be able to fit it straight in? I know the sender pickup is different in the two cars - is it simple enough to get around?
Hope this makes sense - all just ideas jumping around in my head at the moment.
