Default Series 1 Instruments

Hi guys, I've just secured myself a set of chrome dials from an early 2.8 that is being broken up. My question is, is it possible to just swap the chrome rims for the black rims or do you have to swap the whole instrument?

They should just unscrew off, after all there is no other access to the internals. They screw onto short "ramps" pressed in the case, so only a few degrees movement gets them off. There will be a sealing rubber ring, so tread carefully. If it were me I might run a bit of WD40 into the seating area to "persuade it" to come off, and not damage the sealing rubber.

There is nothing to grip onto, BTW, so some rubber gloves or something to grip the bezel will be necessary

Why not leave these intact and just get new chrome rings for your instruments? Seems a shame to break these up.

That's what I did on my Series 3.
