Series 1 saved from the scrapper, but questions.
This is a car I rescued from certain peril last week. It turns out to be a very solid and largely original 1972 XJ that was abandoned following a head rebuild and subsequent dropped valve guide (I can feel the frustration that must have caused).
The motor turned over nicely with a new battery but of course would not start and the fuel lines will need to be cleaned out properly. I don't think it has run in a few years.
I was wondering a couple of things though. I have never seen a series 1 with chrome strips on the side, these have odd plastic inserts and I'm wondering if they are a later addition. Similarly, I haven't seen one with a chrome strip on the bonnet/hood either - this one looks factory as it appears to match up with the base on the leaping cat. Any ideas if these were options?
Secondly, the interior is blue and I wanted to know if it's leather or the same kind of vinyl stuff that's on my series III. the latter is Isis blue I believe (JEF) while the blue on the series 1 appears to be a darker colour, with small perforations in the material.
I'm not as familiar with these early cars and want to keep this one as original on the outside as possible.

Later add-on. Not a Jaguar item.

I'm not a Series I authority. I though the Daimler version had this chrome strip....but this might be the sort of thing, like so many others, that varied from market-to-market

Should be leather, and perforated leather was common on Series I-II cars. AFAIK, there was the option (Series I-II-III) of a cloth trim but never vinyl. Of course, vinyl was often used in various areas, but the seat facings would be either cloth or leather

side trim
Great find !! I'm jealous.... be aware that removing the side trim will more than likely leave holes across the length of the car. That being said, the cars just look better without it - I'm speaking from experience, mine, too, had added on trim. Glad you've found the forum - lots of knowledgeable and helpful people here. If you decide to sell, just let me know - and keep us updated on your progress !
