Forced with winter inside to work on woodwork and hopefully upholstery i am still looking forward to warmer weather and getting back into the 71 XJ6 body. My son was here for Thanksgiving and told me unequivocally that the US sidemarkers need to be removed and filled in. My car is pretty stock and although i think the markers are pretty large and take away from the lines i would like to hear some other opinions other than it is my choice!
side markers are for safety, to be seen by other drivers.
this can be noticed in modern cars where they are wrapping the front and rear light assemblies around the fender sides, what could be uglier? The same XJ side markers were standard in many other cars including MG and I think Rolls Royce and Bentley too.
Removing them creates blind sides to other drivers. Traffic conditions today require as much visibility as possible, especially for antique cars.
In my XJ, I made those side markers blink / flash with the Turn Signals. I would not go back to static side markers.
We never had them until later in the S3 (I think), and then they were repeaters for the indicators.
Our drivers here would be among the worlds worse, and I reckon it would matter not what markers, flashing lights, "naked women: you had there, they would still NOT see you.
I get due respect in the MK X, to big and scary to argue with, luv it.
MY opinion, I dont like those, too large and ugly. Smaller, if its a must, and LED would be better.
I'm pretty sure they're Required in California, maybe not the ones that came with the car, but markers for sure.
I replaced mine with MG lenses that aren't so clunky and have a much flatter profile. I've seen some small round lights from Chrysler products installed, and they look Really nice.
But I almost always plant my feet when someone says this or that HAS TO BE DONE, and they're merely explattering their strongly held opinion. I'm firmly on the side of, It's YOUR car, and if YOU want to shave the lights, then go ahead.
If someone else demands you shave the lights (like where does he get off doing that anyway?), let him get his own car and shave them to his heart's content.
As Clarke said - Looks much cleaner without. In fact I feel a bit sorry for North American series 1 owners. Stromberg carbs with cross over, all amber indicators at front, 5" headlights, side markers, etc. The European cars with the clean original styling are better. Carries through to series 2 as well - note how many owners are looking to fit Euro style bumpers.
