Question Short Stud XK Blocks?

Hi All, I know that lots has been written covering the different evolutions of the XK Block, but most of appears to be centered around the 'long stud' versions, with the latest 3 Series engines being rated as the best.

I have a '73 XJ6, so it's likely it's fitted with an early 'long stud' engine and therefore the most problematic.

I have been offered a freshly reconditioned 'short stud' block and want to know if it's going to be an improvement on my current early '70s 'long stud' block.

I'll be driving a fair way to pick the block up, so if anyone thinks it's not worth it I'd rather know now.

All advice appreciated.

Woz

With time against me, and thinking that any reconditioned block isn't the worst place to start, I bought the Short Stud Block. It came with and Engine Stand, Timing Chain Spares and the OE Jag Workshop Manual!

I've already got a Head Gasket Set, but I would like to get some S/Steel Head Studs and a new Oil Pump for peace of mind. What are the stud lengths I need for the Short Stud Block or can I just buy a set from someone?

I have only seen long S/steel headstud packs sold by David Manners. There isn't really a need for stainless with the short stud blocks because they remain dry unlike the long ones that are continually bathed in coolant. The long stud engine was developed as it was supposed to be stronger. Ha ! They crack between the bores, but I don't think the short stud blocks do, but they may have their own problems. If you are swapping everything else over, make sure you face off the timing chain cover, because the top must be level with the block top face. All blocks were faced off at the factory with the timing covers fitted. If it is proud, the head gasket won't seal properly at the front, and if too low, it will leak.

Thanks Fraser, that is VERY good info. I will check the timing chain cover. It did come with one fitted so I'll assume it's done, but will confirm when I've had a look.

Ultimately I'd like to fit an AJ6, but this should get me back on the road while I'm getting AJ6 parts together.

I've just been out to the garage this morning and it looks like the Timing Chain Cover has NOT been faced off with the Block.
